letrozole, What is Letrozole, How to take Letrozole

Infertility is a big thing these days. Women can encounter various setbacks when it comes to conceiving a child especially women with polycystic ovarian syndrome. This condition comes as a result of having an imbalance of estrogen and progesterone, which causes benign cysts in the ovaries. This affects the menstrual cycle, fertility and a host of other things. In the not so distant past, women with this syndrome were prescribed Clomiphene citrate, a drug commonly known as Clomid. However, studies did not show Clomid to be effective for women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, but they have found Letrozole more effective. Other fertility drugs that are available for women who have trouble conceiving are Gonadotropins. These drugs have to inject which makes them a little inconvenient whilst Letrozole dosage for fertility is much simpler and less uncomfortable.

What is Letrozole?

Letrozole was introduced first as a drug to treat breast cancer. Letrozole (also known as Femara) is an aromatase inhibitor. Aromatase is an enzyme responsible for the production of estrogen in the body, this forces the pituitary gland to produce hormones that stimulate the ovaries and improve endometrial thickness.

How to take Letrozole?

Letrozole should be taken when you get your period. You will be required to take one of the 2.5 mg Letrozole tablets for 5 days starting on the third day of your menstrual cycle. There are cases where a doctor will prescribe a daily dosage of 3 pills a day. Once the first cycle has been completed, your doctor will take your blood to test whether you are approaching ovulation or not.

Some fertility specialists use Letrozole as part of the intrauterine insemination option. In this case, you have to be in close contact with your doctor and might have to visit the fertility clinic a couple of times for blood and urine testing. The doctor might also prescribe an hCG trigger injection to be used at night just before intercourse. You need to be proactive about taking the drugs on time, follow your doctor’s orders and monitoring blood and urine tests constantly. If it doesn’t work take the first, second or third time, you should be able to detect a pattern if there is one and plot another course of action with your doctor.

Side Effects

Letrozole clears out of the body very quickly. This means that it does not stay long enough to affect the uterine lining in a negative way. This means that you do not have to suffer prolonged side effects. The side effects that you can expect are really due to your body reacting to the reduction in estrogen level. Side effects that some women on Letrozole have experienced include

  • fatigue
  • dizziness
  • headaches
  • hot flashes
  • blurred vision
  • insomnia
  • bloating

These symptoms are not as severe as they could be if you were taking the drug for prolonged periods of time instead of just 5 days.

Does it work?

According to various research studies of women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, those who took Letrozole have had great results. Studies show that women on Letrozole had a birth rate of 27.5% which is higher than the 19.1% rate in women taking Clomiphene citrate. So yes the drug should work if you take Letrozole dosage for fertility according to your doctor’s orders.
