The drug Dostinex, otherwise known as Cabergoline, is used when there is an overproduction of prolactin in the body. It is a dopamine receptor from the family of ergot medications. For this reason you need to let your doctor know if you have had any allergic reaction to any type of ergot medication in the past.
When there is an overproduction of prolactin in the body this can cause numerous problems.
In women it can present as:
- The production of unwanted breast milk
- Missed periods
- Or as trouble getting pregnant.
In men it will show as:
- Enlarged breasts
- Or a decrease in sexual desire
The correct Dostinex dosage will start off very low, and will gradually be increased by your doctor over a course of several months. You would usually take this medication twice a week and it can be taken with our without food. The gradual dosage increase is in place to help alleviate side effects, and to monitor the ongoing levels of prolactin in the body.
Dostinex Side Effects
Some of these side effects may be uncomfortable but are not cause for alarm unless they persist or increase.
Side Effects of Dostinex are:
- Nausea or Vomiting
- Stomach upset
- Lightheadedness or
- In some cases you can experience being jittery and unable to sleep
The more severe side effects that need to be reported to your doctor immediately are:
- Shortness of breath
- A persistent cough
- Swollen ankles or feet
- Increased breast pain
- Mood changes especially if you have an increase in depression and/or anxiety or feel at all suicidal
- You also need to report any uncontrollable strong urges such as an increase in the urge for sex, drugs, gambling etc
- And you will need to report any change in vision
You need to communicate well with your doctor before taking this medicine, you need to let him know if you have had any type of liver or kidney problems, any type of heart problems especially any heart valve problems, high blood pressure, pregnancy related blood pressure issues, or any type of breathing disorder. This should not be considered if you have ever had any allergic reactions to Cabergoline or any other type of Ergot medicines in the past. Also remember you will have to have regular blood tests for a period of at least six months or longer to monitor the level of prolactin in your body, so be sure to make all of your doctor’s appointments. You need to be sure to communicate with your doctor about any medications you are currently on so that you can avoid potential harmful or deadly interactions.
The Dostinex Dosage will be increased over a period of time, at least six months, these will be gradual increases to monitor prolactin levels and any side effects you have endured during the taking of this medication. Remember you will only take this medicine about two times a week do not take this medicine every day unless your doctor tells you to do so. You will begin at a very low dosage and the increases will be given in the time frame deemed appropriate by your doctor. You may take this medicine either with or without food you should probably try them both to determine how you feel when you take it.
